First Visits
Children: Unless a problem
is suspected, children should be seen by the dentist
for his/her first visit between
1-3 years of age. An important goal of this visit is
to introduce the child to the dental office and to
develop a trust in the dentist and staff. We consider
this to be a "fun" visit where
the child can ride in the chair, have his/her teeth
counted and meet "Mr. Slurpee".
Depending on the child's age and degree
of cooperation, we may also clean and polish his/her
teeth. It is important for the parent to present the
visit as something to look forward to and reassure
that the visit will be fun. Try to avoid phrases like
"Don't
be afraid" or "Be brave".
Adults: As a new patient in our clinic your first visit would involve updating
your x-rays with your approval, to screen for cavities or any other problems
in the mouth.
Further x-rays may be needed if there is a specific problem with any of the teeth.
The dentist will then perform a complete examination of your jaw joint, tongue,
cheeks, gums & teeth, and if any treatment is needed, will formulate a treatment
plan. We take time to fully explain any treatment you may need and are very open
to answering all of your questions. If desired after the exam, the hygienist
will clean your teeth and recommend how soon your next cleaning should be depending
on the health of your gums.
